A Student Guide to UC Davis

Hi! I'm a senior at UC Davis and I wanted to make a guide for anyone who is currently attending or will attend in the future. I wish I had someone telling me the little secrets the tour guides don't mention.

A little more about me:
I'm majoring in biochemistry with a minor in technology management <-best minor ever. Planning on graduating in Spring of 2013. Came in with way too many units as a freshman so if you have a question about transferring from a CC or anything else, shoot me a message.

If you ask me a question with your username I can answer it straight to your inbox, unless I think it's funny and/or useful to others.

I just did yesterday and still haven’t tested it out, but it’s an app that’s available in big cities (including SF), and now at Habit in Davis.

 1. Download app
 2. Sign up WITH EMAIL
 3. Enter promo code O5ILQC (i think, just check the reviews if that doesn’t work) for free $5
 4. Link your credit card and get an additional $3.45 to spend at Habit.
 5. Enjoy!

Going to try it tomorrow, let me know how it works for you!

If you don’t want to look for my restaurant reviews on Tumblr, here’s the alternative!

Cloud Forrest Cafe is one of my favorite lunch spots in Davis. Every time I come I wonder why I don’t eat here every day. For $5.75 you get a panini and potato salad or carrots. There’s also wifi and they don’t seem to mind you hanging out all day with your laptop. I tried the mixed berry smoothie and wasn’t impressed (tasted like something at McDonald’s) so stay away from that.
In addition to sandwiches they also have salads, juices and coffee. Take your friends here and they’ll thank you for being so amazing.

Paesanos

Great Italian food. Ideal spot for a date with dim lights and great food (~$14/person). This includes yummy bread :) Plates are generally pretty large and big enough to take home. Although it’s not locally owned, it fits in well because it still has class.

why is this picture so big

I have a great love of Yoloberry (frozen yogurt) because the owners are just so wonderful

Little story from my freshman year:

Some friends and I had coupons to a different yogurt shop when a woman approaches us and asks us why we chose there. She then gives us free yogurt coupons to Yoloberry in celebration of their 1 year anniversary. A few days later we go to the free yogurt event for their anniversary and see the woman. We thank her for her kindness and she says we’re the only ones to come up and thank her, so she gives us more free yogurt coupons.

Unlike many yogurt places Yoloberry doesn’t limit how much you can load into your bowl when using a freebie. Great place, but definitely not the only game in town…more reviews to come!

On the way home from the regional park we stopped at Cache Creek Casino for the buffet. When we got our players’ card they gave each of us $25 to spend at the restaurants. Unfortunately the buffet was closed so we chose the cafe instead. The food was very good and we got 3 meals and drinks for our $50. Then we decided to hit the casino.

I immediately lost my money, but we made some of it back playing “Ghostbusters” <- fun :)

Had a good time, wish the golfing wasn’t $100 a round though. And each dollar you play, you only get .002 dollars back to spend in the gift store.

Davis Creamery
(because I hate to call it by it’s new name - Sugar Daddies)
Location113 E Street in The Lofts building.Between Beach Hut Deli and Thai Canteen
This place used to be across the street from my apartment, now it’s all the way downtown. But it’s worth it. This place has the best ice cream in town. Okay, okay, it’s pricey. Every day has a different deal…
Monday is $1 Scoop from 5-10pm Tuesday is $2 Cupcakes all day Wednesday is $6 Quarts of Ice Cream all day Thursday is $3 Cowpies (ice cream sandwich that you create) all day Friday is $3.50 Shakes from 4-7pmBirthday - free cupcake
Maybe not somewhere you can afford to go everyday, but you should check it out

Recently went to Ten22 in Old Sac. (If you’ve never been to this neighborhood it’s a great place to be a tourist close to Davis. Horse drawn carriages, wooden sidewalks, Old West portraits, the works.)
Restaurant is very nice. Basically I was looking for a trendy place that one could dress up a bit in this part of town. Found it! A little pricey, but great for a date. Prices range from $10-30 a person, alcoholic beverages range from $5-9. $5 being a domestic beer, $9 a martini.
If you use this for a date, I recommend either getting salt water taffy or homemade ice cream for dessert and taking a look at all the shops.

Red Hawk Casino

50 minutes away

The casino is really nice, has all the games and classy. Even if you don’t play much they still give you free slot play. Though it’s 21 plus to get the players’ card. And got to love the free drinks.

There’s a great arcade. The prizes are actually attainable and the machines don’t break down every other play. Play the dolphin show game, it’s my favorite ;)

Restaurants are delicious, award winning steak house and chinese restaurant. Pricey, but great for a date night. And if you play a lot, you can just get it comped!

UPDATE: A friend recently told me that if you go at 2:30 on a Friday (Fridays ONLY) and wait around til 3, they bring out the seafood buffet. This means you got in for the normal price ($10) and getting the seafood ($30). Also in the month of July if you have the players card they give you $5 off so $5 for $30 buffet. Not bad!

Thai Canteen is a great place for an informal meal in downtown Davis. Cash only. $1 Thai Iced Teas during Happy Hour (M-F 3-6) are great. Some dishes are excellent, while others fall short, so ask when ordering. And definitely get coconut ice cream with deep fried bananas, sooo good.

All the employees are exceptionally nice. Once, my roommate didn’t have enough money and they told her not to worry about it. Also, I’m dating one of them, so be sure to tip well ;) haha.
